Assistant Engineer (Photonics Test)

Core Technical Team – Sunyu Photonics Pte Ltd

About Sunyu Photonics

Sunyu Photonics builds machines that enable photonics chips to be tested at the wafer level. Our systems help customers transform new silicon photonics ideas from the laboratory into real, manufacturable products.

The photonics industry is evolving rapidly. Many test challenges do not yet have standard solutions. Progress depends on engineers who can experiment, adapt, and develop new solutions.

At Sunyu, engineers work side by side to tackle these challenges through relentless experimentation and hands-on problem solving. As a growing engineering company, every team member shares the responsibility of building photonics test solutions that enable the commercialization of photonic technologies.

About the Role

We are recruiting an Assistant Engineer (Photonics Test) to join our core engineering team.

In this role, you will support Photonics Test Engineers in wafer-level testing, engineering experiments, machine assembly, laboratory work, test procedure development, equipment setup, and other engineering activities. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will contribute to customer projects and the development of photonics test systems.

If you enjoy building things, solving practical engineering problems, and learning by doing, read on.

What You Will Do

  • Perform wafer-level photonics measurements on silicon photonics devices
(e.g. optical alignment, insertion loss measurement, polarization control, automated test flows).

  • Prepare wafers, devices, fixtures, and laboratory equipment for testing.

  • Support Photonics Test Engineers in:

    • Laboratory experiments and engineering evaluations

    • Hardware prototype and machine assembly

    • Software development for instruments and devices

    • Troubleshooting engineering issues

    • Sourcing mechanical, electrical, optical, and electronic components

  • Assemble, calibrate, and maintain photonics test equipment.

  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory.

  • Record, organize, and document engineering and test data.

  • Support customer-facing activities, including:

    • Test demonstrations

    • System installation

    • Commissioning and verification

    • Customer support

  • Local and overseas travel may be required.

Training & Team Culture

  • You will be trained — prior industrial experience is not required

  • You are self-driven to learn a broad range of domain knowledge and skills

  • We are a fast-moving team that works closely and supports each other

  • You will receive direct mentorship and hands-on guidance

  • Most learning happens through real systems, real wafers, and real customer problems

Requirements

  1. Diploma in Engineering, Applied Science, Electronics, Mechatronics, Precision Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.

  2. Curious, investigative, and detail-oriented, with a strong desire to understand how things work.

  3. Honest, reliable, and accountable, with a strong sense of ownership

  4. Able to understand team direction, align with shared goals, break down tasks, and take shared responsibility for success.

  5. Able to perform hands-on laboratory and system-level work.

  6. Able to deliver results in a fast-moving environment.

  7. Willing to support customers and travel when required.

  8. Willing to work overtime when project needs arise; overtime will be compensated with time off.

  9. Good to Have:

    • Experience using laboratory instruments and equipment

    • Familiarity with mechanical assembly and electrical wiring

    • Basic CAD skills (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc)

    • Basic programming skills (e.g. Python, C# etc)
