Project Overview

The Wearable Imaging for Transforming Elderly Care (WITEC) interdisciplinary research group (IRG) is committed to creating next-generation wearable imaging technologies tailored for aging populations. By combining expertise in wearable transducers, biomedical imaging, materials science, data analytics, and healthcare innovation, WITEC aims to design solutions that improve quality of life, support preventative medicine, and reduce healthcare burdens. Specific objectives include the development of wearable ultrasound imaging systems for cardiovascular echography, AI-powered diagnostic algorithms, and integration with digital health platforms for real-time monitoring and clinical decision support.

WITEC brings together interdisciplinary researchers from MIT and Singaporean institutions, including hospitals and research agencies. Through deep collaboration with local partners—clinicians, industry, and policymakers—WITEC ensures that its technological advancements are innovative, clinically validated, and suitable for industrial scale-up.

Responsibilities

The WITEC IRG at SMART is seeking qualified candidates for Postdoctoral Associate positions supervised by Prof. Xuanhe Zhao (zhao.mit.edu) and other researchers from MIT and Singapore. This position entails the following technical responsibilities:

  1. Conduct research on wearable ultrasonic imaging. Explore the use of wearable ultrasound imaging and AI algorithms for continuous disease monitoring.

  2. Innovate ultrasound beamforming and imaging algorithms.

  3. Investigate the use of acoustic metamaterials to enhance the acoustic pulse-echo performance of transducers. Perform acoustic modeling of metamaterials and ultrasonic transducer arrays. Characterize metamaterials and ultrasonic transducers, including (but not limited to): acoustic transmission/reflection, acoustic field mapping, pulse-echo response, and vibroacoustic behavior.

  4. Coordinate with external partners on clinical trials.

  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

1. Ph.D. Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Physics or other related discipline.

2. Prior experience in ultrasonic medical imaging, beamforming, image processing, modelling of acoustic wave propagation in human body, AI-assisted ultrasound signal processing. Experience in using Verasonics, K-wave, Matlab or related software is preferred.

3. Prior experience in ultrasonic transducer design, fabrication, and characterization. Experience in using COMSOL or ANSYS is preferred.

4. Prior experience in acoustic metamaterials analysis, fabrication, and characterization is preferred.

5. Experience in echocardiography is a plus and will be considered favourably.

6. The candidate needs to work well in a team with good communication skill.
