Purpose & Scope

The Maintenance Manager leads all plant maintenance functions and ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all Energy-from-Waste (EfW) equipment and systems. This role provides strategic direction, technical leadership, and operational oversight across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams, supporting continuous plant availability, regulatory compliance, and long-term asset integrity.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead and manage the full maintenance organisation, including mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams.

  • Ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of plant equipment through effective resource planning and team leadership.

  • Develop and implement maintenance master schedules, ensuring strict adherence to timelines to minimise plant downtime.

  • Provide technical guidance and oversight for predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance works.

  • Drive accountability, strong work discipline, and a culture of operational excellence within the maintenance team.

2. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company HSSE policies and relevant safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards and local regulatory requirements).

  • Oversee incident and near-miss reporting, investigations, and follow-up of corrective and preventive actions.

  • Ensure maintenance operations are performed without adverse environmental impact, in compliance with air emissions, water discharge, and noise control standards.

  • Conduct regular HSSE risk assessments, identify hazards, and implement mitigation measures.

  • Collaborate with the safety team to develop, implement, and train staff on emergency response plans pertaining to maintenance-related safety or environmental events.

3. Operational Maintenance Management

  • Lead maintenance of all EfW systems, including waste handling, combustion units, flue gas cleaning systems, boilers, turbine auxiliaries, and ash handling equipment.

  • Ensure optimal equipment performance through routine inspections, troubleshooting, and timely repairs.

  • Implement and continuously enhance predictive and preventive maintenance programmes to reduce unplanned downtime and improve plant reliability.

  • Ensure availability of critical spares and maintenance materials to support uninterrupted operations.

4. Regulatory & Legal Compliance

  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with relevant regulatory, safety, and environmental requirements.

  • Embed a strong safety and sustainability culture throughout the maintenance function.

  • Remain updated on regulatory changes, industry standards, and best practices related to maintenance and environmental compliance.

  • Liaise with regulatory authorities for inspections, audits, documentation, and reporting obligations.

5. Budget & Cost Management

  • Prepare, manage, and track the maintenance department’s annual budget.

  • Ensure resources are optimally allocated while maintaining compliance, safety, and performance standards.

  • Monitor maintenance expenditures and identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements without compromising quality or safety.

6. Training & Development

  • Ensure all maintenance personnel are adequately trained in safe work practices, technical competencies, and proper maintenance of EfW equipment.

  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

  • Facilitate training on new maintenance technologies, safety procedures, and regulatory updates.

7. Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare periodic reports on maintenance activities, equipment performance, reliability trends, and HSSE metrics for senior management and regulatory agencies.

  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation of preventive maintenance, breakdowns, repairs, and system modifications.

  • Maintain comprehensive equipment history records to support long-term reliability planning and audits.

8. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Operations, Technical Services, HSSE, Procurement, and other support functions to identify improvement opportunities and resolve operational challenges.

  • Collaborate with external contractors, vendors, and suppliers to secure timely parts, services, and technical support.

  • Ensure adequate inventory of tools, spares, and consumables to support seamless maintenance operations.

  • Ensure all procurement activities follow company policies and governance standards.

  • Support the development and execution of department budgets, plans, and strategic initiatives.

9. Other Duties

  • Perform any additional responsibilities as assigned to support the plant’s operational and strategic objectives.

Qualification, Skills & Experience

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Engineering or related technical fields.

  • More than 10 years of relevant experience in the energy, utilities, or process plant industry.

  • Minimum 5 years in a maintenance leadership or supervisory role within a continuous-operation environment (e.g., EfW, power plant, chemical, utilities).

Technical & Leadership Competencies

  • Strong leadership, people management, and decision-making abilities.

  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems within an EfW or power generation plant.

  • Strong understanding of maintenance planning, reliability engineering, predictive technologies, and asset integrity management.

  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication skills to engage with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, independent, and able to lead teams under pressure and tight timelines.
