Our Unmanned & Integrated Systems business offers holistic solutions in system engineering and integration. We pioneer maritime robotics and autonomy solutions, provide system integration for complex naval and island air defence System-of-Systems (SoS), and take care of the operation and maintenance of Command, Control, Communications, Computers Intelligence (C4I) systems. As a System Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design, development, integration, delivery and maintenance of Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) systems, with a particular focus on maritime applications. Your contributions will include working alongside multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the seamless integration of advanced technological solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations of our clients and stakeholders. Your expertise will be instrumental in driving innovation whilst upholding the highest standards of quality and safety throughout the project lifecycle.

System Requirements Translation and Architecture Design

  • Translate system-level requirements into verifiable sub-system and component specifications.

  • Design, source and integrate sub-systems by evaluating hardware and software solutions to meet these specifications.

  • Develop and validate system architectures that align with performance requirements, operational objectives and industry best practices.  

System Integration and Development

  • Manage the integration of hardware, software, and sensors into USV platforms, ensuring full functionality of navigation, propulsion, communication and power systems.

  • Collaborate closely with other design teams (e.g., software and hardware engineers), industry partners and internal stakeholders to define, effectively interface different components, evaluate and adapt required solutions that are tailored to the project needs, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and standards.

Testing, Validation and Risk Management

  • Develop and execute comprehensive integration and test plans for USVs in simulated and real maritime environments.

  • Conduct risk assessments and simulations to evaluate system performance under various maritime conditions, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, regulatory requirements and contractual obligations, whilst mitigating potential issues.

  • Actively participate in and support technical reviews and support the development of project plans, ensuring delivery within schedule timelines and budgets are met.

Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Operational Support

  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support to ensure system reliability and high availability during integration, testing and operational phases.

  • Monitor and optimise system performance, including navigation accuracy, energy efficiency and data communications.

  • Contribute to the creation of training materials for personnel involved in the operation and maintenance of USV systems. 

  • Deliver hands-on support during field operations and testing to guarantee smooth deployment and mission success. 

Safety, Compliance and Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Implement and maintain compliance with maritime safety standards, operational guidelines and international regulations governing autonomous vessels.

  • Work collaboratively across disciplines—including engineering teams, naval architects, operations personnel, and industry partners—to ensure seamless system integration and operational effectiveness.

Documentation, Communication and Customer Liaison

  • Maintain and update comprehensive technical documentation, including system specifications, system design, integration procedures, user manuals, test reports and maintenance records.

  • Effectively communicate system design, implementation status and technical information to customers and stakeholders. Prepare, review and present technical documentation and progress update reports regularly. 

Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in autonomous maritime systems, sensors, and system design.

  • Contribute innovative ideas to improve USV capabilities, efficiency, and safety.

  • Actively participate in project meetings to report progress, discuss challenges and propose solutions aligned with strategic objectives, to support ongoing improvement.

 

Qualities We Value

  • Knowledge in Engineering, preferably in System Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related fields that demonstrate foundational knowledge and skills

  • Proven experience in system engineering roles, ideally within unmanned systems or maritime technology, showcasing the capability to adapt to complex and dynamic environments

  • Relevant advanced certifications (e.g., INCOSE CSEP, PMP) is an advantage but not mandatory.

  • Strong understanding of systems integration, testing processes, and lifecycle methodologies to effectively manage and execute projects from concept through deployment.

  • Proficiency in translating system-level requirements into verifiable sub-system and component specifications.

  • Experience developing and executing comprehensive system integration and test plans in simulated and real maritime environments.

  • Familiarity with relevant programming languages and simulation tools (such as SysML, MATLAB/Simulink) to support software development and system modelling efforts.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, software, and communication issues ensuring high system availability and mission success.

  • Knowledge of maritime safety standards, regulatory frameworks, and related compliance requirements; familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and engineering best practices.

  • Experience working with suppliers, OEMs and cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions.

  • Good technical, excellent creativity in problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, able to demonstrate strong reasoning ability.

  • Able to work independently as well as working effectively in team environments and proactively drives project goals forward.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, capable of collaborating effectively with diverse multi-disciplinary teams and clearly conveying complex technical information to diverse stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks, manage time efficiently, and maintain focus under pressure in fast-paced project environments.

  • Commitment to continuous professional development and staying abreast of emerging trends and advancements in unmanned systems and maritime technology.
