System Engineer (Database and Backup) - #1099090

Location: West
Length of Contract: 12 Months (Renewable)
Responsibilities:
Disk & Storage Configuration
Disk Partitioning: Define volume ID, size, and purpose clearly.
Directory Structure: Standardize folder structures for consistency.
Storage Systems: Use approved configurations optimized for database performance.
Server & Hardware Standards
Follow standard server hardware configurations.
Maintain hardware specs suitable for database performance and high availability.
Database Design & Maintenance
Design, create, modify, or remove databases as needed.
Provide technical advice on database usage and performance tuning.
Support developers in optimizing database access code.
Database Standards & Monitoring
Enforce best practices and standard procedures.
Monitor disk usage and database object sizes.
Alert users of space issues early to avoid failures.
Reporting & Diagnostics
Provide monthly database utilization reports to developers.
Perform weekly health checks for integrity and performance.
Patch corrupted data when necessary.
Database Maintenance
Conduct quarterly database maintenance based on industry best practices.
Clustered system maintenance should:
Happen after office hours/weekends.
Be done one server at a time, detaching it during maintenance.
Be followed by rejoining the server to the cluster post-maintenance.
Cluster Management & Failover
Manually trigger failover if automatic process fails.
Troubleshooting must be off-cluster or done after hours.
After resolving issues, reintegrate failed server after hours and validate cluster health.
Backup & Recovery
Backup Strategy: Ensure complete backup and archiving of all systems.
Maintain inventory and movement logs of backup tapes.
Perform daily backups and manage both on-site and off-site media.
Conduct quarterly recovery tests to ensure data recoverability.
Document all test procedures and results; include them in monthly reports.
Batch Jobs & Scripts
Execute batch jobs per predefined schedules.
Monitor all jobs; notify users of any failures and take corrective action.
Data Migration
Complete requested migrations from development/staging to production within 3 working days.
Disaster Recovery & BCP
Coordinate with system admins to update the Business Continuity Plan (BCP).
Participate in Disaster Recovery (DR) drills as required.
Requirements:
Education: Diploma or higher in Computer Science, IT, Information Systems, or equivalent.
Experience: At least 3 years of hands-on experience in System Administration.
Work Style: Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Skills:
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficient in:
Active Directory, Windows & Linux servers
VMware, VxRail, RAID, SAN
Scripting
Microsoft Azure & M365
ITIL concepts and service management practices
Preferred Certifications (not mandatory, but an advantage):
MCSE, VMware, ITIL v3, RHEL, M365 & Azure Administrator
Veeam Certified Engineer
Database Administration Certification (Professional or Associate level)
